ENGLISH DESCRIPTION:

Overview

In 2016, Kadokawa and DeNA Co. collaborated to remake the semi-famous "Ao Oni" in a newer engine of RPG Maker, going from XP to MV. This allowed for a more smooth experience overall, alongside a lot of brand new content which is fully original to this version. It was only ever uploaded to a website and could not be downloaded, and was only ever released in Japanese.

In late 2019, the site hosting it went down, and the only way to continue playing the game was though the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. The snapshots were incomplete though, missing ~50% of the game, meaning it could no longer be enjoyed or played at all.

It was very much on the cusp of becoming fully lost, however, very thankfully, fandom user "Cyanard" had posted a full version, without the errors of the archived versions, that someone named "AdPro" had found, on the Ao Oni Fandom wiki in February 2025, this was the only place it was posted, however, and mostly flew under the radar.

Which is why I am reposted it to Itch, so that more people can actually experience it. I take no credit for this find, all credit goes to Cyanard and AdPro. I simply want more people to be able to play and know about this.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE:

As stated previously, this game was only ever released in Japanese. Despite the main contents of the game not different much from the last version made by Noprops (v6.23), there is also a plethora of brand new content that cannot just be copy-pasted for a translation. 

I have personally started an attempt at localizing it into English using v6.23 as a base, but I do not know Japanese, help on this would be very much appreciated where possible.

List of Differences

Just a small, likely incomplete and very broad, list of differences between Ao Oni 2016 and Ao Oni 6.23

• Made in RPG Maker MV, rather than RPG Maker XP
  • This means that the sprites have all been upscaled quite notably, meaning these are the highest resolution versions of all the original sprites used, nothing in here is stylized like the newer games that have been releases.
• Two entirely new endings where Mika, Takuro, and Takeshi, all live and escape the mansion alongside Hiroshi.
• A very in-depth replacement for the original SOUTHPARK mode that has two variants of it's own
• A crossover story with the horror-comedy movie "Sadako vs Kayako"
• Some fully original cheat codes

In the original release on the website, there were also achievements gained in certain areas, these sadly do not work any more as the original website is defunct, but maybe some day I will attempt a restoration of some kind.

TL;DR:

This is an official, full remake of Ao Oni v6.23, with a ton of added content, and released only in Japanese, which I am uploading to itch.io for preservation purposes. I plan to try and make an English localization, but do not know Japanese and will likely need help of some kind.

概要

2016年、KADOKAWAとDeNAは共同で、RPGツクールの最新エンジンを用いて、やや有名な「青鬼」をリメイクしました。これにより、全体的にスムーズなプレイ体験が実現し、このバージョン専用の完全オリジナルコンテンツも多数追加されました。しかし、このゲームはウェブサイトにのみアップロードされ、ダウンロードはできず、日本語版のみのリリースでした。

2019年後半、このゲームをホストしていたサイトが閉鎖され、ゲームをプレイし続ける唯一の方法は、インターネットアーカイブのWayback Machineを利用することでした。しかし、保存されたスナップショットは不完全で、ゲームの約50%が欠落していたため、もはやプレイすることは不可能でした。

まさに完全に失われる寸前だったのですが、幸運にも、ファンダムユーザーの「Cyanard」さんが2025年2月にAo Oni Fandom wikiに修正版を投稿してくれました。以前「AdPro」さんが発見して別の場所に投稿していたアーカイブ版にあったエラーは一切ありませんでした。しかし、このバージョンは他に投稿されておらず、ほとんど注目されていませんでした。

だからこそ、より多くの人にプレイしてもらえるように、Itch.ioに再投稿しました。この発見の功績は私ではなく、CyanardさんとAdProさんに帰属します。私はただ、より多くの人にこのゲームをプレイしてもらい、知ってもらいたいだけです。

重要な注意事項：

前述の通り、このゲームは日本語版のみでリリースされました。ゲームの主な内容はNoprops氏が作成した前バージョン（v6.23）と大きく変わりませんが、翻訳のために単にコピー＆ペーストするだけでは済まない、全く新しいコンテンツも多数含まれています。

個人的に、v6.23を参考にしながらこのバージョンの英語へのローカライズを試み始めましたが、日本語が分からないため、可能な限りご協力いただけると大変ありがたいです。
